Yesterday, BCIT unveiled a very Vancouver 50th birthday present at the Downtown Campus (DTC) in Vancouver, BC. The third of four selfie mosaic murals to be gifted in BCIT’s 50th year, the DTC mural incorporates more than 2,000 photographs. The larger, base image shows two modes of transportation that are increasingly popular among DTC staff and students (and a particular Vancouver mayor!).Downtown Selfie 5

BCIT Downtown Campus students try to find their own selfie amidst 2000 images.

The bicycle on the left is a Canadian-owned Brodie, an oft-seen Vancouver commuter bike. While the scooter on the right is an Italian Vespa. Together, they reflect a growing awareness of sustainable transportation in the Lower Mainland and a nod to BCIT’s international reach.

From a distance the viewer sees one image. Closer up, the viewer will notice that the mural is composed of hundreds and hundreds of images of people’s faces: people who were part of the BCIT family during its 50th year (students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, volunteers, sponsors, suppliers etc.).

The mural was painstakingly composed by BCIT in-house designer Mirabelle Rohatgi and imagined by Senior Director, Special Projects Catherine Clement. Driving the campaign to collect all those selfies was 50th Event and Project Strategist Erin McInnis, aided by a dedicated social media team, and captured by Photographer Scott McAlpine.
